Sadly, on May 17, 2022, we lost the Greek composer and electronic musician Evangelos Odysséas Papathanassiou, known to the world by the diminutive Vangelis.
I owe my love for music largely to him. Listening to his minimalist pieces helped me understand the fundamentals of music.
The first time I listened to Vangelis during my childhood was when I watched Carl Sagan’s incomparable science series Cosmos. In it, I enjoyed a selection of several pieces by the Greek genius, especially the series’ main theme.
Years later, I discovered that the main theme was a fragment of the magical 1975 album Heaven & Hell.
Although it would be difficult for me to choose my favorite piece from the composer’s long and excellent discography, I have entitled this little musical tribute “Heaven & Bliss”, in honor of the first piece of Vangelis music I enjoyed listening to.
You can listen to the album here.
